Air-to-air heat pumps, or VRF (VRF, VRV) systems, operate efficiently for heating down to extremely low temperatures and for air conditioning in summer. They are ideal for commercial and industrial premises, as well as for any buildings where maximum efficiency, compactness, flexibility and technical sophistication are required.

Heat pumps are the cheapest source of heat

The payback period for replacing an existing system with a heat pump can be from 1 to 4 years. To reduce the cost of heat production, it is proposed to use air source heat pumps for air-to-air heating or air-to-water heat pumps for modernization of the classic water heating system

Air-to-air heat pumps

Air-to-air heat pumps are guaranteed to operate down to outdoor temperatures of -25 °C and below. The average annual coefficient of conversion of electrical energy into heat is about ESCOR 6. At -20 °C, this conversion coefficient is about ESER 3.

Example of a commercial heating system: Air-to-air heat pumps

The equipment is selected for an outdoor temperature of -20°C, specifically using a coefficient of 3. A heating system selected in this way generally more than covers the cooling requirements in summer. Installing heat pump systems is almost 4–5 times more economical in winter than gas or electric heating, and 1.5–2 times more economical than chiller-fan coil systems.

Air-to-water heat pumps of various types (monoblock units, split systems) and sizes ranging from 3 kW to 250 kW are most commonly used in residential properties or for the renovation of traditional water-based systems. In summer, these heat pumps act as chillers for use with various types of fan coils.

Heat pumps are the cheapest source of heat

Air-to-water heat pumps

Air-to-water heat pumps are used to produce hot water, which also operate down to -28 °C. The coefficient of performance of such pumps is about 4.5, so the price is 3 times cheaper than energy from a gas boiler.

Advantages of a system using a heat pump:

There is no need to build a boiler room, gas pipeline, heating station and heat transfer system indoors.
The installed electrical capacity of the facility does not increase. The electrical capacity designed for the air conditioning system is sufficient.
Low operating costs. On average, 3-4 times cheaper than boiler heating at current energy prices.
No increase in capital expenditures compared to a classical system. Typically, the capital costs for such a turnkey system are 10-15% lower than for classic HVAC systems
The lack of water eliminates the possibility of frostbite on the heaters.
A system of duplication of thermal power is provided.

Water-to-water or ground-to-water heat pumps of various capacities are used in situations where an air-source system is not suitable. Such heat pumps require boreholes, nearby water bodies or a large plot of land for ground collectors.
